New Tunes and Old Songs is a beautifully crafted selection of acoustic American roots music styles from Sonny Black with flavours of country blues, folk and bluegrass. Together with Latin American and Tex-Mex influences several tracks are subtly complemented by accordion, banjo and violin adding depth to the work. Creating a soundscape is Black’s forte. ‘Blue Waves’ has you down on the Mexican border, ‘The Mump’ in the Appalachian mountains at a country dance, ‘Passaro Pequeno’ with its Latin jazz flavour has you dancing a rumba and ‘Panhandle Rag’ with its pedal steel guitar sound has you driving down a long road in Texas. All very evocative.
